The Man With 2 First Names...James Joyce

Last semester in Eng 200-01 I read a short story by James Joyce called Eveline. The story was about this spineless young woman who gave up her only chance of freedom because she was too afraid of the unknown. Eveline lived with her emotionally abusive father. She felt that she always had to take care of him because that was one of his way of manipulating her, by making her feel that he wouldn't survive without her nor her without him. Eveline met and fell in love with a sailor who wanted to take her away and marry her, she almost left with him but because of all the years of mental and emotional abuse her father put her through she couldn't leave. I know I called her spineless in the beginning it's just that it hard to see why someone would stay in that kind of relationship if it is causing them so much pain, but I realize that it's a different case when you're the one in the abusive relationship.
Back to James Joyce, I feel his story of Eveline was well written, it is very short but has a powerful meaning behind it. I prefer the short and powerful types of work.

Check This out!!!

http://browse.deviantart.com/collections/ This is a cool website for the artist-in-you, you can download the art that you like or you can post your work for the world to see. It even shows some instruction on how to draw.

I love to paint especially oil on canvas so here is the site of the woman who inspired me Frida Kahlo http://fridakahlo.com/, I love her paintings because they are so contraversal, and there is something appealing about the way they can be a little disturbing.

One of my ultimate favorite singers ever is the talented Alicia Keys. I think she has a beautiful sound and her lyrics are very inspirational. It's just so impressing to me how she plays the panio so beautifully, and writes such wonderful words. http://aliciakeys.com/

This girl is a real good artist she does tattoos as well.http://www.missdanitat2.com/about.html, I found her paintings to be pretty original.

Yes I know this may sound a bit corney, but I used to love New Kids on The Block, when I was younger, so I am glad that they are back and still as cute as ever so heres a little taste of them...http://nkotb.com/

Well hope you enjoyed the sites.

My Introduction into Poetry

I never made enough time to read, so I learned about most authors such as William Shakespeare, Earnest Hemingway and so on through school. It was Langston Hughes who turned my attention more into poetry. I learned about him and read some of his poems in my late years of elementary school or early years of middle school. It was African American month and we had an assignment to look up a famous African American person and write a short biography about them. I remember the way I felt when I read the poem "The Negro Mother." I appreciated poetry so much more and began to become more involved with my own writing. The poem that I would like to share with you because of September 11Th coming up and the coming elections is "Let America Be America Again." Ironically he wrote this poem in 1938 long before all the resent events but it's amazing how it relates to the now!http://www.kansasheritage.org/crossingboundaries/page6e1.html is a good site because it gives a short biography of Hughes and has some great pictures.
